FAMILY MATTERS — A MONTHLY MONDAY NIGHT WRITING GROUP
The first Monday of each month- New Session begins this Sept – 2 openings. Dates: Sept. 9, Oct. 7, Nov. 4, Dec. 2, Jan. 6, 2024
Our minds are filled with stories — from our lives, our offices, and our dreams. Therapy is one way of digging deep and transforming ourselves. So is writing.
Join our ongoing Monday night monthly writing workshop series. Five, two-hour workshops will help you open up to your own stories. Writing exercises, meditations, and readings will help you bring your stories to life on the page. Whether you are writing fiction or creative non-fiction, memoirs, or personal essays, our workshop will help you tap into your experiences and turn them into stories.
All great works of fiction and creative non-fiction are built on the same premise: story-telling. In these workshops, you will learn how to apply the principles of story-telling to build scenes, develop characters, write dialogue (both interior monologue and spoken dialogue), utilize description, and weave together the threads of your imagination and experience into powerful, memorable stories. For each class, you may submit five pages of your work (1250 words double spaced) and will receive written feedback. All classes include in-class writing prompts, discussion of 250-word homework assignments, and critique of the short, assigned readings you will receive upon registration.
Location: Zoom (until further notice)
Fee: $750. To reserve, please Zelle or Venmo @Judith-Rabinor or send a check to Judy Rabinor, 250 West 90th Street, Suite 7a, NY NY 10024.
Co-taught with Laura Zinn Fromm, award-winning journalist and author of Sweet Survival: Tales of Coping and Cooking.

It’s been said “Every great memoir, novel and short story contains a secret.” Secrets propel stories, and a concealed fact—whether kept hidden or ultimately revealed—can transform a character’s life. Best selling authors such as Liane Moriarty (The Husband’s Secret), and Anita Shreve (The Pilot’s Wife), know about the power of secrets, as do current writers such as CJ Hauser (The Crane Wife) and Tara Ison (At the Hour Between Dog and Wolf).
Join Laura Zinn Fromm and me as we examine the way secrets are held, revealed, uncovered and can explode a life on the page (fiction and non-fiction) or in reality. In this workshop, we will discuss the uses of secrets in storytelling and explore how to successfully write about your own secrets. Come in person (250 W 90th St, NYC) or join via Zoom. Be prepared to create and write about secrets – your own or those you imagine. Sharing optional.
